Les branches en forme de S forgent l’architecture des lustres de Saint-Louis. Aériennes, toujours transparentes, elles n’attirent pas l’oeil en premier. Ce sont des supports, pour les bougies puis les ampoules. On y fait passer les cables électriques car elles sont creuses. Pour façonner une branche de lustre, les verriers agissent à deux sur le cristal incandescent. Ils l’étirent en tournant chacun de leur côté, ce qui donne cet effet de cordage. Pour Torsade, les souffleurs ont repris la technique et créé un U au lieu du S. Pour la boucle, ils ont enroulé la branche autour d’un cabestan d’acier, qui lui a permis de refroidir en gardant son volume. Une led à gaine invisible, elle aussi développée spécialement pour le projet, y a ensuite été glissée. Alors la branche s’allume, tout simplement, seule en scène.

These S-shaped arms determine the method of construction of the Saint Louis chandeliers. Their ethereal and ever-pellucid presence might not be eye-catching. They are regarded as supports for candles and light bulbs. Thei hollow core allows the electricalcables to pass through. To shape a chandelier arm, the crystal makers need to work in pairs to handle the incandescent molten crystal. Thye stretch and twist in unison on both sides to create the interwined pattern of a rope. For the torsade, the crystal blowers reinterpreted this technique to create a U-shaped piece instead of an S-shaped arm. For the loop-shaped pieces, they wrapped the molten crystal around a steel capstan, which allowed it to cool down into a 3-dimensional form. An LED with an invisible sheath, developed especially for the project, was then slipped in. the branch lights up, owning the scene with nothing more than its serenity.
